Rhinoplasty Q&A with Dr. Gilardino

What is a rhinoplasty?

-A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure commonly known as a nose job that is performed to enhance and improve the appearance of the nose.

What’s the difference between an open and closed rhinoplasty?

-The difference is in the technique used to perform the rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty is performed with incisions hidden entirely inside the nose. An open rhinoplasty uses the same “hidden” incisions in addition to a small incision on the columella (the vertical bridge of skin between your nostrils). This leaves a nearly-invisible scar once healed and should not be a concern for the patient. During your consultation, Dr. Gilardino is an expert in both open and closed rhinoplasty and will discuss which option may be preferable for you based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

If I dislike my facial profile (view from the side) are there any other surgeries that can be combined with a rhinoplasty?

-If needed, Dr. Gilardino might recommend combining a rhinoplasty with chin augmentation surgery to improve the proportions of the profile. Some patients that had a treated overbite as children might be interested in bringing their chin forward additionally for an harmonious look. These options will be discussed during your consultation.

I’m feeling tightness in my upper lip area and it doesn’t really move much. When will I be able to smile normally again?

-It can take several weeks for your lower face area to feel normal again since there is a lot of swelling.

Can/will I be able to eat normally after surgery?

– You shouldn’t have any problems eating after your rhinoplasty surgery. You may find your taste is decreased (just like when you are nasally congested with a cold) but this will resolve quickly over a period of a week or two.

The tip of my nose is numb and a bit stiff – when will it feel normal again?

-Sensation will return to the tip of your nose but this may take a few months. 80% of the swelling resolves rapidly in the first 3-4 weeks and the final result will be apparent about 1 year after surgery. Your nose will look great after the first month (no one except you will notice the small amount of residual swelling).

What type of anesthesia is used for a rhinoplasty?

-most rhinoplasties are performed under general anaesthesia to maximize patient safety and comfort.

How much does a rhinoplasty cost?

-The cost for this surgery varies depending on the procedure required. It ranges between $8000-14000.

I have some breathing issues or a deviated septum as well as my cosmetic concerns – can this be addressed during the same procedure.

Absolutely. Dr. Gilardino will do a full assessment of your nose during your consultation. Although the goal of aesthetic rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of your nose, often the maneuvers used to achieve this will also improve your breathing.
